Born in Hammam-Lif, Tunisia, in 1944, Férid Boughedir is a film critic and historian as well as a director. His documentary Camera d'Afrique (1983) was a landmark account of African cinema and a way of bringing it to the West. His fiction films are warm coming-of-age comedies. Halfaouine: Boy of the Terraces (1990), about a twelve-year-old boy who is caught between the women's world of the baths and the male world, was among the most successful Tunisian films ever. A Summer in La Goulette (1996) is about three friendships among communities in Tunis in 1967.
