Born in Yaoundé in 1966, Jean-Pierre Bekolo studied in Paris and worked with the Cameroonian director Jean-Marie Teno. His films are playful, formally daring and intellectually sharp, and reject the realist tradition of much African cinema. Quartier Mozart (1992), a satire set in a Yaoundé neighbourhood where a young girl is transformed into a boy by a witch, was an arthouse success. Les Saignantes (2005) is a Cameroonian science-fiction film about two women in a corrupt future. He has also taught and written about African cinema.
