Tunde Kelani

African Cinema

Born in Lagos in 1948, Tunde Kelani trained as a cinematographer in London and shot many Yoruba-language films before becoming a director and producer. Under his company Mainframe, he has made richly cultural films in Yoruba with high production values, often from literary works and with political themes, and sold directly on video. Saworoide (1999), in which a king is installed in a Yoruba kingdom with disregard for tradition, is a political allegory of Nigeria's military rule. He is also known for The Narrow Path and Maami (2011).
