Dušan Makavejev

Balkan Cinema

Born in Belgrade in 1932 and dying there in 2019, Dušan Makavejev was the best known director of the Yugoslav Black Wave, a movement of the 1960s whose films mocked the Communist regime and social conformity. He started in amateur film clubs and made provocative collage films mixing fiction, documentary, politics and sex. Love Affair, or the Case of the Missing Switchboard Operator (1967) and W.R.: Mysteries of the Organism (1971), a film about the psychoanalyst Wilhelm Reich and sexual liberation under Communism, made him famous and caused the film to be banned in Yugoslavia. He left to work abroad, making Sweet Movie (1974) and Montenegro (1981).
