Born in Wolfsburg in 1970 and raised partly in the United States and Austria, Edward Berger worked mainly in television, directing episodes of Deutschland 83, The Terror and the series Patrick Melrose. His film All Quiet on the Western Front (2022), the first German adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque's novel, won four Oscars including international feature, and seven BAFTAs including best film and director. He also made Conclave (2024), a thriller about the election of a new pope, which won the Oscar for adapted screenplay.
