Plot

In 1917, a young German volunteer, Paul Bäumer, goes to the western front, full of enthusiasm, together with his schoolmates. He finds only mud, death and futility in the trenches, while the leaders negotiate an armistice. Edward Berger's 2022 German adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque's novel won four Academy Awards, including Best International Feature.

Sinekatalog’s take

Edward Berger's German-language adaptation follows a teenage soldier in World War I. Brutal and bleak, with a loud, haunting score, it focuses on futility more than heroism.Sinekatalog’s own editorial review – not a user or critic quote.
