Gene Kelly

Classical Hollywood

Born in Pittsburgh in 1912 and dying in Beverly Hills in 1996, Gene Kelly was a dancer, singer, actor and choreographer who brought athletic, everyday-man dance into the Hollywood musical. With Stanley Donen he co-directed On the Town (1949), Singin' in the Rain (1952), one of the most loved films ever made, and It's Always Fair Weather (1955). His solo film Invitation to the Dance (1956), an all-dance film without dialogue, won the Golden Bear at Berlin. He later directed Hello, Dolly! (1969).
