Born in New York in 1899 and died in 1983, George Cukor came from the stage to Hollywood with the arrival of sound. He became known as a 'woman's director' for his work with Katharine Hepburn, Greta Garbo, Judy Garland, Judy Holliday and Audrey Hepburn, though his skill covered comedy, drama and musicals.
