Goran Paskaljević

Balkan Cinema

Born in Belgrade in 1947 and dying in Paris in 2020, Goran Paskaljević studied in Prague at FAMU, with the Czech New Wave still in the air, and made films that commented on the Yugoslav crisis. Someone Else's America (1995) followed a Montenegrin immigrant in Brooklyn. Cabaret Balkan (also released as The Powder Keg, 1998), set in Belgrade on a single night in 1995 with interlinked stories of violence, was a bleak portrait of a society after years of war and won the European Film Award for best film. He later made The Optimists (2006).
