Born in Burchard, Nebraska, in 1893 and died in 1971, Harold Lloyd was, with Chaplin and Keaton, one of the three great silent film comedians, and at times the most successful of the three at the box office. His 'Glasses' character was an ordinary, eager young American trying to succeed. He performed his own stunts, even after losing most of the fingers on one hand in an accident, and the image of him hanging from a clock face in Safety Last! (1923) is one of the best known in cinema. Credited directors on his features included Fred Newmeyer, Sam Taylor and Ted Wilde, but Lloyd controlled his films closely.
