Born in Tokyo in 1962, Hirokazu Kore-eda began in television documentaries before turning to fiction. His quiet, humane films about the family, memory and loss are often compared to Ozu's. After Life (1998) and Nobody Knows (2004), the latter based on a real case of abandoned children, brought him international attention. Shoplifters (2018), about a poor family that survives on petty theft, won the Palme d'Or at Cannes. He has also made films in France and Korea.
