Born in Łódź in 1938, Jerzy Skolimowski was a poet, boxer and screenwriter (he co-wrote Wajda's Innocent Sorcerers and Polanski's Knife in the Water) before directing. His early films, such as Walkover and Barrier, were free in form and restless, and with Deep End (1970), made in London and Munich, he became an international name. He later worked in exile in Britain and the United States and returned to Poland, and made a late-career comeback with Essential Killing (2010) and EO (2022), the latter about a donkey.
