John Boorman

British Cinema

John Boorman (born 1933 in Shepperton, England) trained as a critic and made documentaries for the BBC before directing Lee Marvin in the cool, fractured crime film Point Blank (1967). Hell in the Pacific (1968) followed, then Deliverance (1972), a story of four city men on a canoe trip that goes terribly wrong. His later films, among them the science-fantasy Zardoz (1974), the Arthurian Excalibur (1981) and the autobiographical Hope and Glory (1987), show a taste for myth, landscape and the violence under it.
