John Schlesinger

British Cinema

Born in London in 1926 and died in Palm Springs in 2003, John Schlesinger began as an actor and a maker of television documentaries. A Kind of Loving (1962), Billy Liar (1963) and Darling (1965) were pillars of the British New Wave and of Swinging London. He then won the Oscar for best director for Midnight Cowboy (1969), the only X-rated film to win best picture, in which a naive Texan and a sickly New York hustler form a friendship. He then made Sunday Bloody Sunday (1971), an honest portrait of a bisexual love triangle, and the thriller Marathon Man (1976).
