Born in San Sebastián in 1958, Julio Medem studied medicine before turning to film. His works are marked by elaborate structures, coincidences, symbolism and a poetic view of landscape and fate, often set in his native Basque Country. Vacas (1992) is a family saga on a Basque farm over three generations. Lovers of the Arctic Circle (1998) is a story told from two perspectives of a love that lasts across decades, and Sex and Lucia (2001) was a popular success. He has also made a documentary about the Basque conflict, The Basque Ball.
