Born in Sofia in 1978, Kamen Kalev studied in Bulgaria and the United States. His debut Eastern Plays (2009), a quiet and urgent drama about a recovering addict in Sofia who saves a young Turkish brother and sister from a neo-Nazi attack, won the best actor and the best director prizes at the Sofia and Cairo festivals and played at Cannes. His later work includes Island (2011) and February (2019).
