Bulgarian cinema built a state industry under socialism, with a notable group of 1960s directors such as Binka Zhelyazkova, whose films were censored for their frankness. After 1989 the industry shrank, yet a younger generation has returned with realist, tightly observed dramas about post-communist life, often supported by European co-productions.
