Kenneth Branagh

British Cinema

Born in Belfast in 1960 and raised in Reading after his family moved during the Troubles, Kenneth Branagh trained at RADA and became a stage star and founded the Renaissance Theatre Company. His debut as a director was Henry V (1989), a muddy and hard-edged version of Shakespeare that won him the BAFTA for director. He then adapted Much Ado About Nothing (1993) and a full-text Hamlet (1996). He later directed Thor (2011) for Marvel, Cinderella and Murder on the Orient Express, and the autobiographical Belfast (2021), which won the Oscar for original screenplay.
