Kira Muratova

Soviet Poetic Cinema

Born in Soroca, then in Romania, in 1934 and died in Odessa in 2018, Kira Muratova studied at VGIK under Sergei Gerasimov and worked at the Odessa Film Studio. Her films, with stylised dialogue that repeats and overlaps, uncomfortable humour and a refusal of heroes, were repeatedly banned or shelved by Soviet censors, and she was prevented from working for years. Brief Encounters (1967) was held back until 1987. Asthenic Syndrome (1989), a bleak vision of Soviet life, won the Silver Bear at Berlin, and her later films, such as The Tuner (2004), continued in the same wry, grotesque mode.
