Born in Recife in 1968, Kleber Mendonça Filho was a film critic before directing Neighboring Sounds (2012), a portrait of a middle-class street in Recife. Aquarius (2016) was in competition at Cannes. Bacurau (2019), co-directed with Juliano Dornelles, shared the Jury Prize at Cannes, and The Secret Agent (2025) won the best director prize there.
