Latin American Cinema

Filmmakers from or working in Mexico and Latin America who explore class, myth and politics.

Latin American filmmakers of the 1960s saw cinema as a weapon against poverty and colonial dependence. Glauber Rocha's Brazilian Cinema Novo, with its slogan 'an idea in the head and a camera in the hand', was joined by Fernando Solanas and Octavio Getino's Third Cinema in Argentina, Cuban films by Tomás Gutiérrez Alea and Humberto Solás, and Jorge Sanjinés' work with indigenous communities in Bolivia. Military dictatorships forced many into exile, but the region's cinema returned in the 1990s and 2000s with Walter Salles, Alfonso Cuarón, Alejandro González Iñárritu, Guillermo del Toro, Lucrecia Martel and Pablo Larraín.
