Plot

In a village in Xochimilco, near Mexico City, an indigenous woman, María Candelaria, is rejected by her neighbours because her mother was a prostitute. She loves Lorenzo Rafael, a young man who plans to marry her, but the cruel storekeeper, Don Damián, makes their lives miserable. When she poses for a painter, the villagers' rage turns on her. Emilio Fernández's 1944 film, photographed by Gabriel Figueroa, with Dolores del Río and Pedro Armendáriz, was among the first Mexican films to win major international recognition, taking a prize at the first Cannes festival.

Sinekatalog’s take

Emilio Fernández's Mexican classic tells of an indigenous woman shunned by her village for her mother's past and the man who loves her. Dolores del Río and Pedro Armendáriz are luminous in a lyrical, beautifully photographed melodrama.Sinekatalog’s own editorial review – not a user or critic quote.
