Born in Havana in 1941, Humberto Solás made Manuela (1966) and the epic Lucía (1968), which follows three women of the same name across three periods of Cuban history and won the Gold Prize in Moscow. He also directed Cantata de Chile (1975), Cecilia (1981) and A Successful Man (1985). He died in 2008.
