Cuban cinema was transformed by the 1959 revolution, which founded ICAIC and made film a tool of national culture. Tomás Gutiérrez Alea and Humberto Solás created sophisticated works that mixed political commitment with humour and irony, and the island became a hub for Latin American film culture. Despite resource shortages, Cuban filmmakers keep making critical, inventive films.
