Tomás Gutiérrez Alea

Latin American Cinema

Born in Havana in 1928 and died in 1996, Tomás Gutiérrez Alea studied in Rome at the Centro Sperimentale and became the most important director of Cuban cinema after the Revolution. He was a founder of the national film institute ICAIC, and while he was a supporter of the revolution, his films looked critically at bureaucracy and the compromises of intellectuals. Memories of Underdevelopment (1968) is a classic of Latin American cinema, and Strawberry and Chocolate (1993), co-directed with Juan Carlos Tabío, was nominated for an Oscar.
