Fernando Solanas

Latin American Cinema

Born in Olivos, Buenos Aires, in 1936 and died in Paris in 2020, Fernando 'Pino' Solanas was a film-maker, politician and musician. With Octavio Getino he made The Hour of the Furnaces (1968), a four-hour documentary on Argentina's neocolonial dependence, made in secret and shown in clandestine screenings. It was a founding text of the 'Third Cinema' manifesto. He went into exile in France after threats of death in the 1970s. After returning he made Tangos: The Exile of Gardel (1985) and Sur (1988), and was later elected as a national deputy and senator.
