Plot

In a slum on the edge of Mexico City, a gang of boys led by the violent Jaibo steal, fight and beat the blind musician they hate. Pedro, a gentle boy rejected by his mother, tries to find honest work but is drawn into Jaibo's world, with tragic results. Luis Buñuel's 1950 film, made in Mexico, is a pitiless portrait of poverty that mixes social realism with dream sequences. It was first attacked in Mexico and then won the director's prize at Cannes, bringing Buñuel back to international attention.

Sinekatalog’s take

Luis Buñuel's harsh study of Mexico City street kids is brutal, poetic and unsentimental. Its dream sequences and cruelty rejected pity for realism, and the film remains a shock and a masterpiece.Sinekatalog’s own editorial review – not a user or critic quote.
