Born in Lourenço Marques (now Maputo), Mozambique, in 1931, Ruy Guerra trained in Paris and settled in Brazil, where he became a key figure of Cinema Novo. Os Cafajestes (1962) and Os Fuzis (1964, Silver Bear at Berlin) were followed by A Queda (1978), Eréndira (1983) and Ópera do Malandro (1986). He also acted in Werner Herzog's Aguirre, the Wrath of God.
