Plot

Soldiers are sent to a drought-stricken town in the north-east of Brazil to guard a food warehouse from a hungry population. Tension builds between the poor, who believe in a saint's ox, and the soldiers, who are under orders. Ruy Guerra's 1964 film, a work of Cinema Novo, won the Silver Bear at Berlin and was an angry political statement about hunger and power.

Sinekatalog’s take

Ruy Guerra's Cinema Novo drama sends soldiers to guard a food warehouse in a drought-stricken town, as hungry villagers follow a mystic's holy ox. Raw, tense and bitterly political, it is a powerful portrait of hunger, faith and force.Sinekatalog’s own editorial review – not a user or critic quote.
