Walter Salles

Latin American Cinema

Born in Rio de Janeiro in 1956, Walter Salles began with documentaries and television, and became the leading figure of the Brazilian cinema of the 'Retomada', the revival that followed the collapse of state support in the early 1990s. Central Station (1998), the story of a bitter letter-writer and an orphan boy travelling across Brazil, won the Golden Bear and two Oscar nominations. His road films, such as The Motorcycle Diaries (2004), on the young Che Guevara, explore Latin American identity. I'm Still Here (2024), set during the military dictatorship, won the Oscar for best international feature.
