Born in Salto, São Paulo, in 1920 and dying in 2009, Anselmo Duarte was a leading actor of the Vera Cruz studio before directing. His O Pagador de Promessas (The Given Word, 1962), from a play by Dias Gomes, about a farmer who tries to carry a cross into a church in Salvador to fulfil a vow, won the Palme d'Or at Cannes, the only Brazilian film to have won it, and an Oscar nomination. It was a landmark of the Cinema Novo period though he stood apart from that movement.
