Born in Salta, Argentina, in 1966, Lucrecia Martel made short films and television work before directing La ciénaga (2001), the first part of her Salta Trilogy, followed by The Holy Girl and The Headless Woman. Her films are set in the provincial north, among bourgeois families and their servants, and use off-screen sound, overlapping speech and a restless camera to create a mood of unease. She is considered one of the leading directors of the New Argentine Cinema.
