Born in Mexico City in 1971, Carlos Reygadas worked as a lawyer and diplomat before turning to cinema. He has made sensory, contemplative films with non-professional actors, long takes, spiritual themes and an unconcealed interest in sex, violence and landscape. Japón (2002) won a special mention at Cannes, and Battle in Heaven (2005) provoked controversy. Silent Light (2007), shot among the Plautdietsch-speaking Mennonites of northern Mexico, won the Jury Prize at Cannes, and Post Tenebras Lux (2012) earned him the best director prize there.
