Born in São Paulo in 1955, Fernando Meirelles worked in television and advertising before City of God (2002), co-directed with Kátia Lund, which earned him an Academy Award nomination for best director. He then directed The Constant Gardener (2005), Blindness (2008) and The Two Popes (2019).
