“My! Such laziness!”

1969 · 1 h 35 min

Cast

Grande Otelo Paulo José Dina Sfat Jardel Filho

Plot

Macunaíma, a hero with no character, is born black and grows up to be white in the Amazon, then travels to São Paulo to recover an amulet. His adventures with his brothers and with a revolutionary woman form a satire of Brazil's culture and politics. Joaquim Pedro de Andrade's 1969 adaptation of Mário de Andrade's novel is a colourful, irreverent film of the Tropicália movement.

Sinekatalog’s take

Joaquim Pedro de Andrade's satirical fantasy follows a hero with no character who changes colour and travels from the Amazon to São Paulo. Wild, funny and political, it is a colourful tropicalist farce on Brazil's contradictions.Sinekatalog’s own editorial review – not a user or critic quote.
