Plot

As he lies in bed in his old age, the writer Marcel recalls his life in the salons and society of late-nineteenth-century and early twentieth-century Paris, from childhood to the First World War. The characters of the aristocracy and the demi-monde come and go as memory shifts. Raúl Ruiz's 1999 film, an adaptation of the last volume of Proust's In Search of Lost Time, with Catherine Deneuve, Emmanuelle Béart and John Malkovich, is a sumptuous essay in memory.

Sinekatalog’s take

Raúl Ruiz brings the last volume of Proust to the screen as the dying Marcel recalls his life in the salons of Paris. Catherine Deneuve and Emmanuelle Béart lead a dazzling cast in a dense, beautiful film where memory moves like a river.Sinekatalog’s own editorial review – not a user or critic quote.
