Born in Argentina in 1946 and settled in Brazil from the 1960s, Héctor Babenco made King of the Night (1975) and Pixote (1981), a harsh film about street children in São Paulo. Kiss of the Spider Woman (1985) earned him an Academy Award nomination for best director. His later films include Ironweed (1987), At Play in the Fields of the Lord (1991), Carandiru (2003) and My Hindu Friend (2015). He died in 2016.
