Guillermo del Toro

Latin American Cinema

Born in Guadalajara in 1964, Guillermo del Toro studied special-effects make-up before directing Cronos (1993). His films mix horror, fairy tale and history, with a deep affection for monsters, who are often more humane than the humans. Pan's Labyrinth (2006), set after the Spanish Civil War, won three Oscars, and The Shape of Water (2017) won best picture and best director. He also made Hellboy, Pacific Rim and a Pinocchio set in fascist Italy, and he produces and champions other filmmakers' work.
