Born in Santa Fe, Argentina, in 1925, Fernando Birri studied at the Centro Sperimentale in Rome and founded a documentary school at the Universidad Nacional del Litoral. His Tire dié (1960) is a landmark of Latin American social documentary, and Los inundados (1961) won the prize for best first film at Venice. He later made ORG (1979) and A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings (1988). He died in 2017.
