American Independent Cinema

Born in Miami in 1949, Lawrence Kasdan was a copywriter who became one of the most successful screenwriters in Hollywood, writing The Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark and Return of the Jedi. His debut as a director was the neo-noir Body Heat (1981). The Big Chill (1983) followed a group of college friends reunited at a funeral and became a generational touchstone. His other films include Silverado (1985), The Accidental Tourist (1988) and Grand Canyon (1991), which won the Golden Bear. He later co-wrote The Force Awakens and Solo.
