American Independent Cinema

Festival-driven, director-led films outside the major-studio formula.

American independent cinema grew from the 1980s as directors began making films outside the big studios, helped by the Sundance Institute and festival. John Cassavetes had earlier shown the way with improvised, low-budget work, and in the 1980s and 90s Jim Jarmusch, Spike Lee, the Coen brothers, Steven Soderbergh and Quentin Tarantino built reputations on sex, lies and clever scripts. Richard Linklater, Wes Anderson, Paul Thomas Anderson, Kelly Reichardt and Todd Haynes followed with distinct styles, and many of them later moved between small and large budgets. The word 'independent' now describes a spirit as much as a way of financing.
