Hal Hartley

American Independent Cinema

Born in Lindenhurst, New York, in 1959, Hal Hartley became a key figure of the American independent cinema of the 1980s and 90s with deadpan comedies full of stylised dialogue, which he often scored himself under the name Ned Rifle. The Unbelievable Truth (1989) and Trust (1990), which won the Waldo Salt screenwriting award at Sundance, were followed by Simple Men (1992), Amateur (1994) and Henry Fool (1997), which won the screenplay prize at Cannes and gave rise to two further films, Fay Grim (2006) and Ned Rifle (2014).
