Steven Soderbergh

American Independent Cinema

Born in Atlanta in 1963, Steven Soderbergh was 26 when sex, lies, and videotape (1989) won the Palme d'Or at Cannes, and it is often seen as the start of the modern American independent cinema. He alternates between studio hits and experimental projects: Out of Sight (1998), Traffic (2000), which won him the Oscar for best director, Erin Brockovich and Ocean's Eleven (2001). He often serves as his own cinematographer and editor under pseudonyms, shoots on cheap digital cameras such as iPhones, and has announced several retirements.
