Todd Haynes

American Independent Cinema

Born in Los Angeles in 1961, Todd Haynes studied semiotics at Brown University and became a key figure of the New Queer Cinema with Poison (1991), which won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance. His films play with genre and form to explore identity, desire and the way society treats the outsider. Safe (1995) is a study of illness and environment, and Far from Heaven (2002) reimagines the melodramas of Douglas Sirk in 1950s Connecticut. I'm Not There (2007) casts six actors as different versions of Bob Dylan, and Carol (2015) adapts Patricia Highsmith's love story.
