Richard Linklater

American Independent Cinema

Born in Houston in 1960, Richard Linklater studied at the University of Texas and founded the Austin Film Society. His first feature Slacker (1990), a plotless journey through a day in Austin, was a landmark of independent film. He is known for talkative films about time, memory and chance encounters: Dazed and Confused (1993), Before Sunrise (1995) and its sequels Before Sunset and Before Midnight, followed over eighteen years, and Boyhood (2014), filmed with the same cast over twelve years. He also works with rotoscope animation, as in Waking Life and A Scanner Darkly.
