Born in Tarutino, then in Romania, in 1933 and dying in Bucharest in 2018, Lucian Pintilie was a theatre director before his first film. The Reenactment (Reconstituirea, 1970), in which two teenagers are forced by the authorities to re-enact a bar fight for an educational film, was banned by the Communist regime, and Pintilie left Romania for France. He returned after 1989 to make The Oak (Balanța, 1992), a bleak portrait of the last days of Ceaușescu's Romania, and An Unforgettable Summer (1994). He is considered a forerunner of the Romanian New Wave.
