Born in Istanbul in 1916 and dying in 2011, Lütfi Ö. Akad is widely seen as a founding figure of Turkish auteur cinema. He made his first films in the early 1950s in the age of Yeşilçam, the Turkish studio system, and gave its melodramas a realist style and a feeling for landscape and class. Hudutların Kanunu (1966), a smuggling drama on the Syrian border starring Yılmaz Güney, and Kızılırmak Karakoyun (1967) were landmarks. In the early 1970s he made a trilogy of migration from the village to the city, Gelin (1973), Düğün (1974) and Diyet (1974). Düğün won him best director at the Golden Orange.
