Born in Danville, Quebec, in 1880 and died in 1960, Mack Sennett began as an actor with D. W. Griffith at Biograph, then founded the Keystone Film Company in 1912. His studio made fast, anarchic slapstick comedies with chases, pratfalls and pie fights, with the Keystone Cops, the Bathing Beauties, and stars such as Mabel Normand, Fatty Arbuckle and Charlie Chaplin, whose career began there. He was a producer-director and a talent spotter, and the studio set the pattern for silent screen comedy.
