Born in Karlsruhe in 1976, Maren Ade studied at the Munich film school and co-founded the production company Komplizen Film. Her second feature, Everyone Else (2009), a study of a couple on holiday in Sardinia, won the Silver Bear. Toni Erdmann (2016), a three-hour comedy about a prankster father who visits his corporate daughter in Bucharest, was acclaimed at Cannes, won the LUX Prize and the European Film Award for best film, and was nominated for an Oscar.
