Born in Rome in 1915 and died in 2010, Monicelli was one of the masters of commedia all'italiana. His comedy of 1958, Big Deal on Madonna Street, is considered by many critics the start of the genre. His films mix humour and sadness in portraits of ordinary Italians, often played by Vittorio Gassman and Alberto Sordi.
